Our
commitment to exemplary sustainable tourism practices
The
Pacuare Lodge has been carefully
planned and constructed to effect a minimum of impact on the river/rainforest
site upon which it is located. Building materials were rafted
in or purchased from the local inhabitantsfor example no
trees were cut on our site of primary rainforest to construct
the bungalows and lodge. Wood for the bungalows was bought from
a sustainable reforestation project operated by and benefitting
small local farmers. Roofs for the bungalows are made with palm
leaves, purchased and installed by the Cabecar Indians living
in the area and using their traditional methods of sustainable
harvest and construction style.
No generator is used to produce electricity. Guests are provided
with candles for their bungalows, and the main lodge is lit with
gas lanterns at night. Gas for cooking is rafted in. A sewage
system with individual septic tanks for each bungalow was designed
and constructed to process wastes in an environmentally friendly
way. Garbage is separated and biodegradable wastes are processed
on site, while the small amount of other waste is rafted out.
Aventuras Naturales was the first adventure travel company to
acquire parcels of primary forest in this area solely for the
purpose of conservation. Near the site of our eco-lodge we own
close to 30 hectares of primary rainforest bought because it was
in danger of being cleared. Because our goal is preservation of
this untouched virgin rainforest, no visitors are allowed into
this area.
We employ indigenous people both permanently on our lodge management
staff and by contract for activities like maintenance of the palm-thatched
roofs. Aventuras Naturales also has an ongoing Community
Support Program to share the benefits of responsible tourism
with the local community.
