Option #1:
Explore Sarapiquí and Pacuare
3 nights / 4 days

You will travel from Arenal to the lush lowlands of primary tropical rainforests and rich second-growth habitats located in the northeastern region of Sarapiquí. This area borders Braulio Carrillo National Park, which harbors such species as tapirs, jaguars, sloths, white-nosed coatis, white-faced capuchins and howler monkeys. Next, continue on to the Pacuare River adventure, which we personally operate with pride and passion! Regarded as some of the finest white water in Latin America, the wild and scenic Pacuare River may be the ultimate tropical wilderness adventure. The river alternates between swiftly coursing rapids and placid stretches through magnificent canyons making it one of Aventuras Naturales' most exhilarating rafting trips.

Day 4 - Overnight in Sarapiquí
From Arenal Volcano you will be transported to Sarapiquí and the Sueño Azul Resort, a charming lodge that rises over a lush hillside. The Puerto Viejo and San Rafael rivers converge here to forge a tranquil and enchanting setting ideal for rest and relaxation. The resort's proximity to Braulio Carrillo National Park makes it the perfect haven for nature lover excursions. The lodge’s "palenque"-style rooms infuse a cozy rustic charm in keeping with the surrounding landscape, and come equipped with private bath/shower, hair dryer, ceiling fans and a veranda overlooking the lake, mountains and rivers.
There is no shortage of activities for you to choose from at the 500 acre Sueño Azul farm. Spend a pleasant afternoon horseback riding around the picturesque slopes of the property, take on a guided hiking tour along nature-rich trails, or go out on an revitalizing waterfall tour (weather permitting). A relaxing night at Sueño Azul awaits you after this exciting day of exploration. Enjoy a romantic meal at the open-air dining room, wind down amid spectacular river scenery on your private terrace, or enjoy a refreshing cocktail in the jacuzzi.

Day 5 - Pacuare River Two-Day Adventure
After a restful night’s sleep you will be transported to the small town of Tres Equis to begin an extraordinary two-day Pacuare white-water river adventure. The Pacuare River, officially designated a “Wild and Scenic River”, offers some of the best and most spectacular white water rafting in Latin America. You will spend the night at the enchanting Pacuare Lodge and experience first-class service, gourmet dinning, and a sublimely peaceful atmosphere in a stunningly beautiful tropical rain forest!

Before setting off down river our veteran guides will instruct you on all necessary safety precautions. The Pacuare River offers visitors one of the most intense and thrilling white water rafting trips available anywhere in the world. Once in the water, you'll experience the exhilaration of rushing waves, swirling foam, and expanses of tranquil water amid steep gorges overgrown with teeming verdant rain forest. Dozens of species of mammals and birds thrive in this virgin paradise.

The first day’s five-mile rafting expedition ends at our very own Pacuare Lodge, a magical retreat nestled in the midst of an ethereal rain forest. Surrounded by ancient towering trees, the rustic style two-story main lodge provides comfortable dining facilities on the first floor, and plenty of relaxing hammocks in the charming second floor open-air lounge.

Palm-thatched modern wooden bungalows have been carefully constructed to merge into the surrounding rain forest. The bungalows are nestled beneath enormous trees that have watched over this forest for centuries. Enjoy a delightful early evening at our upstairs bar and game area, followed by an exquisite dinner of superb gourmet cuisine. As the evening draws to a close, grab a lantern and head off to your comfortable bungalow for a deep relaxing sleep.

Day 6 - Rafting down Pacuare River - Return to San José
Dawn breaks the silence that hovers over the Pacuare Lodge with the melodious calls of exotic tropical birds and the pleasant drone of the river’s rushing rapids a few hundred feet away. A hearty breakfast of freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee, pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit and mouth watering home made bread awaits you before the start of your final day of rafting.

The second day of your journey will be even more challenging than the first as you face thirteen miles of adrenaline numbing excitement! The river charges through exquisite virgin rain forest filled with a myriad of dazzling colors and exotic sounds. Sparkling waterfalls tumble down, enveloping you with silver misty spray as you try to concentrate on the next set of roaring rapids.

Your expert guides will stop the rafts along the way and lead you up paths and side streams that open onto plummeting waterfalls and natural water slides. Take time to enjoy the spectacular scenery, swim in deep crystal clear pools, and splash around to your hearts content! At about midday a tasty picnic lunch of sandwiches and fruit will be served along the river’s edge. The day ends with the triumph of having conquered one of the world’s most wild and scenic rivers. At our river take-out you may change into dry clothes in our private restroom facilities before boarding a comfortable minivan that will return you to San José in time for dinner.
