Option #2:
Explore Sarapiquí and Tortuguero
3 nights / 4 days

You will travel from Arenal to the lush lowlands of primary tropical rainforests and rich second-growth habitats located in the northeastern region of Sarapiquí. This area borders Braulio Carrillo National Park, which harbors thousands of species of plant and animal life including tapirs, jaguars, sloths, white-nosed coatis, white-faced capuchins and howler monkeys. The next part of your journey will take you from Sarapiquí to Tortuguero. Entering Tortuguero is like going back in time to a primeval jungle of lush natural and manmade water canals that traverse enchanted rainforests thriving with wildlife. After arriving at the lodge you can explore the exuberant tropical rainforest of Tortuguero National Park, on Costa Rica's Northern Atlantic coast. From July to September, you'll have the amazing opportunity to witness nighttime turtle nesting - an extraordinary experience you will not forget!

Day 4 - Overnight in Sarapiquí
From Arenal Volcano you will set off to Sarapiquí and the enchanting tropical Sueño Azul Resort. Here you can spend a leisurely afternoon horseback riding around the resort's beautiful 500-acre farm, hiking on a guided tour along impressive scenic trails, or exploring a refreshing waterfall (weather permitting). Before calling it a night, why not admire the spectacular river scenery from your private terrace, enjoy a romantic meal at the open-air dining room or sip a cool cocktail in a soothing Jacuzzi as you rest up from your exciting adventure-packed day.

Day 5 - Tortuguero National Park
You’ll get off to an early start this morning as you pass through the town of Guápiles and on to a warm hearty breakfast at the Río Danta Restaurant. After breakfast you will be transported by the Pachira Lodge staff to their private dock at the town of Matina. Here you will begin a fascinating 90-minute boat ride along the famous Tortuguero canals to the Pachira Lodge, located near the town of Tortuguero on the Northern Caribbean coast.

The exotic Pachira Lodge rests on the main Tortuguero canal, and across from the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Well-marked trails cut inland allowing guests easy access into this bewitching jungle environment. As you enter deeper into the jungle don’t be surprised if you spot Howler monkeys playing tag amid the treetops or see brightly colored toucans perched amid the rain forest canopy. Tiny colorful poison dart frogs also inhabit these jungles and make great photos - as long as you don’t get too close!

A tasty and abundant midday meal awaits you after checking into the rustic-style Pachira Lodge. In the afternoon there will be a guided jungle hike and a canal boat trip to better acquaint you with the surrounding rain forest. The hike will take you through a magnificent tropical rainforest that covers an area of more than 47,000 acres and provides refuge to an abundant and thriving wildlife population. The Tortuguero Canals are a network of navigable natural and man-made lakes and canals used both for basic transportation and jungle exploration tours. A trip through these waterways will provide visitors with spectacular scenery and the chance to observe crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and numerous multi-colored birds in their natural environment. With nearly 14 miles of coastline, Tortuguero National Park is one of the most important nesting sites for four varieties of marine turtles, including the massive Green Turtle, which can weigh over 400 pounds.

After a satisfying and adventure filled day you will return to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon and evening. Enjoy a striking sunset as you drift lazily in the swimming pool under the comforting watch of luscious palm trees, or slide into a steaming Jacuzzi for a soothing dip. The lodge’s comfortable rooms come equipped with private bath, hot water and ceiling fan. For dinner you will be treated to exquisite international and local cuisine at a spacious family-style restaurant, staffed by friendly local residents. Your evening doesn't end here though; between the months of July and October an amazing night tour to the nesting site of the giant Green turtle will put a crowning finishing touch to an already fabulous experience! Witness these magnificent creatures as they lay their eggs on a secluded beach, and then return to the ocean - one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles!

Day 6 - Tortuguero to San José
Spend your final morning at Tortuguero relaxing in a hammock or engaging in a lively game of volleyball with fellow travelers before saying farewell to this extraordinary region of Costa Rica. After breakfast you will be transported back to San José, with a rest stop and lunch break at the Río Danta Restaurant. You will overnight in San José at the Hotel Don Carlos.
